Interesting. I suddenly have weird images of tacet musicians doing some kind of freaky dance backfield during the vamp =) ... This could make for a cool halloween show.. if that is your intention.
A few notes:
1) The standard recognizable bassline vamp-- even though it is a key song trait, you might want to put the basses on something that better reinforces the ensemble in the chorus. Right now they're still playing the electric bass part, but since it's marching band it might be worth it to not always stick to the actual part.
2) The drums are probably going to need something a little more interesting.. it seems like you mostly just vamp on the same pattern.. I understand that the real song doesn't have a very complex drum part, but you should talk with the drummers and see if they can help you to elaborate the part (or else they will =)

You were correct in your assumption. If the band can make it sound good, Dave (StuD) would like to do it at the Halloween Rally, and Adam (DM) is thinking about it for the game on 11/2 (maybe with some Dance Team action too). I tried to keep it simple so we can pull it off in less than 2 weeks time; it's being introduced this next Monday.
Your thoughts did cross my mind while writing. However, I kept it simple for the following reasons:
As for the bass line, like the drums in a dance mix, it keeps the rest of the band together, the beat people are listenin' for when they're shakin' those hips. Besides, they have a cool little sixteenth note run that they can work on cleaning up.
As for the drums, what I did was left room for self-elaboration if you will. 1) They never look at the music after the first time anyway (unless you write a hard part, but then they wouldn't learn it in time to play it), and 2) I think fills and the like are best left to be figured out by them.
Thanks for your comments! -SD
