The "transparent" plastic strip on the front of the box (with the SageTV logo) isn't 100% transparent to IR!

The larger hole in the center of the screen is for the IR signal to pass through to the sensor. Too bad this plastic isn't more transparent to IR...

Step 4: Using a 3/8" drill, place the frontcap over something you can drill through, like a cardboard box. *Carefully* drill out the entire larger hole using very light force. The plastic is like butter.

You may have to lift up the plastic strip (it's glued on lightly) to remove any plastic burs that may have made their way inbetween the front cap and the plastic strip

You can lift the front strip by pressing as shown here - be careful. Here you can also see the newly-drilled hole.

** NOTE: Of course, I take no responsibility for anything that you may end up doing to your box. Following these instructions will void your warranty and probably permanently turn your shiny new STX-HD100 into a brick. Continue at your own risk!!

The STX-HD100 is SageTV's HD Media Extender. This box is great, but it has one annoying flaw: Out-of-the-box, it doesn't receive IR commands very well, and you have to point the remote directly at the box with military precision.

Fortunately, there is a fix. The pictures in this album (along the the captions) describe a step-by-step simple mechanical fix. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver and a drill with a 3/8" drill bit.
